The quick read

What matters now

The big picture

2-5 and tied for last after a 43-13 rout at Carolina, Tampa Bay sits one game off second in a soft NFC South. Quarterback Baker Mayfield and head coach Todd Bowles lead a last stand division chase with a South crown ceiling and a basement floor if Raymond James Stadium never flips.

Personnel

2-5 and tied for last after a 43-13 rout at Carolina, Tampa Bay sits one game off second in the NFC South. Baker Mayfield fronts a last stand South chase where road maul sets a crown ceiling and banged up depth sets a basement floor.

Performance

Outscoring foes 162 to 151 through seven games at 2-5 off a 43-13 rout in Carolina, Tampa Bay wins ugly behind the run wall and rush. Baker Mayfield lives off play action until protection proves it, with a South crown ceiling if the pass game holds and a basement floor if sacks and picks pile up.

What comes next

2-5 with an 0-4 home record against a 2-1 road record, Tampa Bay now gets five South games to decide the season. Baker Mayfield opens that stretch with Atlanta at home Nov 1, a tiebreak that either revives the chase or buries it.

Tampa Bay finally paired road toughness with a finish, winning 24-16 at Dallas and 43-13 at Carolina behind the ground game. That run first punch lets Mayfield play efficient instead of desperate, which keeps five South games live. With 15,225,108 dollars in active space per OverTheCap, the front office can still fund a short term patch before Atlanta visits Nov 1.

Largest drag is an 0-4 home mark at Raymond James Stadium with 19 or fewer points in all four losses, which blocks a chase that needs home South wins over Atlanta and Carolina to climb from tied last.

Atlanta at home Nov 1 at Raymond James Stadium shows whether the Carolina run wall and cleaner protection travel home and stack into a South streak.

Florida Sunday: First Win, Blowout, Bye

3 Florida NFL teams. 3 different Sundays. 1 of them did not dress.

Dolphins

Hard Facts First

Miami Dolphins 28, New York Jets 25. MetLife Stadium. Oct 25, 2026. The Dolphins are 1-5. The Jets are 2-5.

Win No. 1 took 6 tries. Head coach Jeff Hafley got his first win with the club. Quarterback Malik Willis went 14 of 21 for 208 yards and 2 touchdown passes. He added 8 carries for 37 yards and a 2-yard touchdown scramble. Both passing scores went to rookie wide receiver Caleb Douglas, back from a 3-game ankle absence. Douglas caught 2 passes for 70 yards. Every catch was a touchdown: 7 yards on the opening drive for his first NFL score, then 63 yards down the sideline in the fourth for a 28-17 lead.

Running back Ollie Gordon II carried 25 times for 103 yards and a 1-yard punch. Tight end Greg Dulcich led Miami in receiving yards with 5 catches for 86. Safety Michael Taaffe intercepted Jets quarterback Geno Smith at the Miami 21. Miami led 21-7 at half and led from the opening drive on. A team that had not held a lead in 5 games held 1 from snap 1.

New York did not quit. Tight end Mason Taylor caught 2 touchdowns. The last, plus a 2-point conversion, cut it to 28-25. At the 2-minute warning Miami faced fourth-and-1 at the Jets 49. Hafley kept the offense on the field. Willis pushed for 2 yards. Miami ran out the clock.

Rookie safety Kyle Louis was activated off injured reserve before kickoff after a knee injury that had kept him out since the opener. Next: New England Patriots at Hard Rock Stadium.

Desk's Take

Paper bags can stay in the closet for 1 week. That is all this win buys, and that is fine. Rebuilds do not owe anyone a clean narrative. They owe you a first punch that lands. Miami landed 1.

Willis did not invent a franchise. He threw for 208, ran for a score, and converted the fourth-and-1 that separates a coach who wants the job from a coach who is still auditioning for it. Hafley kept the offense out there. That call is the column. Everything else is color. Douglas coming back from the ankle and turning 2 catches into 2 touchdowns is the rookieware a 1-5 team is supposed to live on. Gordon's 103 is the ground truth under the fireworks.

Do not crown anybody. Do not soft-pedal either. Avoiding 0-6 matters in a building that has been living on draft math and vibes. Bleacher Report, FanSided, and Yahoo Sports still had Miami picking 3rd with Week 7 unfinished, behind the 0-6 Chargers and the 1-6 Titans. Beating the Jets did not wreck April. It did wreck the zero. Digits: 1-5. Pride restored for 7 days. The Patriots at Hard Rock will tell you whether this was a pulse or a blip.

The Jets may still own the better draft haul. Same projections had New York at 2-5 with 3 of the top 11 picks. Miami got the win. New York got the picks. That trade is acceptable when your season had been a closed coffin. Treat adults like adults: this was a necessary first. It is not a ceiling. It is proof the offense can lead a football game and close 1. Hafley's first win came on the call a winless coach is supposed to be too scared to make. Remember that the next time somebody asks if the rebuild has a pulse.

Buccaneers

Hard Facts First

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 43, Carolina Panthers 13. Bank of America Stadium. Oct 25, 2026. The Buccaneers are 2-5. The Panthers are 3-3.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield returned after missing 3 games with a dislocated right thumb. He wore a protective glove on the throwing hand. He went 7 of 11 for 64 yards and 1 touchdown pass. The Bucs did not ask him to win a volume shootout. They asked the run game and the defense to own the day.

Tampa Bay rushed for 258 yards on 49 carries. Running back Bucky Irving had 24 carries for 106 yards and 2 touchdowns. Running back Sean Tucker scored on a 46-yard run. Running back Kenny Gainwell added chunk gains, including a 29-yarder that helped set up Irving's second score. Wide receiver Tez Johnson caught Mayfield's touchdown pass. Defensive lineman Calijah Kancey returned a strip-sack fumble for a touchdown. Outside linebacker YaYa Diaby had 3 of Tampa Bay's 5 sacks. The Bucs forced 4 turnovers, including 2 interceptions by the secondary. Carolina quarterback Bryce Young went 14 of 27 for 163 yards, 1 touchdown, and 2 interceptions. Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard was held to 7 carries for 33 yards.

Tampa Bay scored 33 points in the first half, the third-most first-half points in franchise history. The club snapped an NFL-long streak of 12 straight games decided by 1 score or less. This was the Bucs' first NFC South win of 2026. They sit 1-0 in the division at 2-5 overall. Next: Atlanta Falcons at home in Week 8.

Desk's Take

Mayfield came back. The glove survived practice. Carolina found out the supporting cast did not need him to play hero ball to bury a division rival.

258 rush yards is not spice. It is the meal. Irving's 106 and 2 scores, Tucker's 46-yarder, Gainwell's leverage runs, 49 carries as a team: that is an identity statement with a thumb still healing. Coach Todd Bowles did not ask Mayfield to throw the building down. Mayfield went 7 of 11 for 64 and 1 score and went home with a 30-point road win. That is how you protect a healing quarterback without pretending the season is already over.

The defense wrote the other half. 5 sacks. 4 turnovers. Kancey walking a strip into the end zone. Diaby eating 3 sacks. Young at 2 interceptions and a day that never found rhythm. Carolina still leads the NFC South at 3-3, but the math got loud: Tampa Bay at 2-5 is 1 win behind the leader with 5 division games still ahead. Digits, not vibes. A 43-13 stomping ends the 1-score soap opera that had followed this team for 12 straight games. Competence is not the story. Violence is. If that front keeps finishing and that run game keeps leaning, 2-5 is a bruise, not a eulogy. Atlanta at home is the next receipt. Bank the division win. Demand the same script when the opponent is not handing you 4 takeaways. The glove got through Carolina. The identity has to get through Atlanta.

Jaguars

Hard Facts First

The Jacksonville Jaguars did not play on Oct 25, 2026. Week 7 was their bye.

They enter the bye at 4-2, first in the AFC South. Week 6 in London ended Texans 34, Jaguars 31 at Wembley Stadium on Oct 18 before 82,497. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence went 24 of 41 for 306 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Running back Bhayshul Tuten caught 2 touchdown passes. Wide receiver and defensive back Travis Hunter scored a receiving touchdown and intercepted Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud in the same game. Kicker Cam Little tied it at 31 with a 60-yard field goal. Houston kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn won it with a 49-yard field goal as time expired. Stroud threw for 312 yards and 3 touchdowns. The loss snapped Jacksonville's 3-game winning streak and left the Texans at 2-4.

Week 5 in London was the opposite ending: Jaguars 19, Eagles 17 at Tottenham on Oct 11, sealed by Little's 57-yard walk-off after a kickoff return set up 1 second. Wide receiver Parker Washington had 6 catches for 124 yards and 2 scores in that win. Jacksonville went 1-1 across the pond, then sat Week 7. Houston and Indianapolis both sit at 2-4 in the division chase. Next: Indianapolis Colts at EverBank Stadium on Nov 1, 1 p.m. ET, CBS.

Desk's Take

Bye weeks are where soft desks invent drama. This desk will not. Jacksonville did not play. Say it plain. Then look at what the bye is protecting.

4-2 and alone atop the AFC South after a London split is a real seat at the table. The Eagles win was chaos earned: Little from 57 after the lead flipped with 8 seconds left. The Texans loss was chaos unpaid: Little from 60 to tie, Fairbairn from 49 to end it. Lawrence threw 4 touchdowns and still walked out on the wrong side of a division game. Hunter scored and picked in the same afternoon and still watched a walk-off. That is not a fluke team collapsing. That is a contender learning that closing travel weeks is the tax on being taken seriously.

Head coach Liam Coen said he was proud and confident. Lawrence said they made a few too many mistakes. Believe the second line. The bye is the pause between the ocean and the Colts. Use it. Fix the mistakes Lawrence already named. Keep the offense that can drop 31 on a rival. Demand a defense that does not leave a 49-yarder as the last word. Indianapolis at EverBank on Nov 1 is not a vibe check. It is the first home date after London, and the division will be watching whether 4-2 was a platform or a plateau. Contenders rest. Pretenders invent urgency on an empty Sunday. Jacksonville gets the rest. Then it has to cash it against a 2-4 Colts team that would love to ruin the homecoming.

Statewide closer

Miami got off zero. Tampa Bay got a 30-point division receipt and a healthy-enough Mayfield. Jacksonville got a bye at 4-2 after London took 1 and gave 1. Florida did not sweep. Florida did not vanish. 1 breakthrough. 1 thrashing. 1 pause. That is a real NFL Sunday in this state.

Baker Mayfield Is Expected Back for the Bucs' Trip to Carolina

1-5. That is where Tampa Bay sits, and that record does not care whose thumb is healthy. The only win of the season came away from Raymond James, where the Bucs are 0-4, so Carolina is no punishment.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield's first week of practice since dislocating his right thumb went the way the Bucs hoped. He was a full participant on Oct. 21 and Oct. 22, and coach Todd Bowles said he is ready and will return at Carolina on Oct. 25.

Mayfield hurt the thumb on his throwing hand in Week 3 against Minnesota and has missed 3 games. He has practiced in a white glove with added support to keep the thumb from bending back again.

The Bucs said they wanted to see how the hand handled a full week of throwing before they committed. Now they have. Rookie Jalon Daniels started the last 3 games. Do not call Mayfield a cure. He was 0-3 before the thumb, with 615 yards, 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Daniels went 1-2 with 501 yards, 3 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. The completion rates are a rounding error apart, 63.5 percent to 63.2. What Mayfield buys is 114 more yards and half the interceptions. That is field position, not a win streak. Mayfield will be throwing without wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, who was ruled out with concussion and foot injuries. Right tackle Luke Goedeke is also out with a calf injury.

Carolina is 3-2 and leads the NFC South, and this is the Bucs' first division game. Kickoff is at 1 PM ET at Bank of America Stadium. Atlanta visits Tampa on Nov. 1, so the NFC South gets 2 straight looks at whatever that thumb has left.

The glove got through practice. The thumb has to get through Carolina, or 1-5 becomes 1-6 with the division leader pulling away.

The Bucs Let a 16-3 Lead Get Away, and Now They Wait on Baker Mayfield's Thumb

The Bucs led the Steelers 16-3 going into the fourth quarter on Oct. 18 at Raymond James Stadium. Tampa Bay walked off with a 26-19 overtime loss and a 1-5 record.

Pittsburgh came back from 13 points down in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Then, on the first possession of overtime, Aaron Rodgers threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Germie Bernard. The Bucs got one chance to answer, and it ended on fourth down when Jalen Ramsey sacked Jalon Daniels.

Daniels made his third straight start in place of Mayfield and had a rough afternoon. The undrafted rookie completed 22 of 43 passes for 164 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. The Bucs are 1-2 in his starts.

That is why Carolina is about Mayfield. He dislocated his right thumb, on his throwing hand, late in the Week 3 loss to Minnesota on Sept. 27 and has missed 3 games since. He has not practiced since the injury. That is expected to change on Oct. 21.

"He's supposed to practice Wednesday," head coach Todd Bowles said on Oct. 19. "We're going to take a good look at him there and then we'll kind of evaluate him during the week and see how he does."

Nothing is decided yet. Bowles said both quarterbacks will be in the meetings and the Bucs will prepare as though either could start at Carolina on Oct. 25. "We'll see how the week goes before we decide who it is," he said. If Mayfield cannot go, Daniels makes a fourth straight start.

Mayfield's return comes down to a first practice in almost 4 weeks and a decision before Carolina. Practicing on Oct. 21 would be a real step. It would not guarantee he starts.

What happens in Charlotte matters either way. It is a division game, and at 1-5 the Bucs have little room left to fall further behind.

A healthy Mayfield would give the offense its best chance to finish games like the one it let slip against Pittsburgh. The Oct. 21 practice is the first sign of whether that help arrives in time for Carolina.

Two Hands on the Ball

Four lost fumbles. Twenty-four points the other way. A 33-27 loss at Paycor Stadium on Sep 13.

The Buccaneers are 0-1. The football was not.

Baker Mayfield completed 23 of 28 for 216 yards. Zero interceptions. Zero passing touchdowns. Five carries, 30 yards, one rushing score. He was sacked four times. He signed a new three-year, $165 million extension earlier that week. Then he put the ball on the ground three times and lost all three.

That is not "zero turnovers." That is three gifts with a receipt.

Bucky Irving added the fourth lost fumble. Cincinnati turned those four giveaways into 24 points. It was Tampa Bay's first game with four or more lost fumbles since Sep 18, 2014. Todd Bowles did not dress it up. Turnovers. False starts and penalties. Missed tackles. Either a turnover or points. That was the week in one coach sentence.

Mayfield owned it out loud: "This one falls on me." Good. The tape already said it. The box score already said it. The only soft version of this story is the one that counted interceptions and ignored the football bouncing on the turf.

Correction Before Comfort

An earlier Bucs desk take called the opener close enough to hurt and floated Mayfield as sharp with zero turnovers. The completion percentage was real. The zero was not.

Lost fumbles count. Three of them belonged to the quarterback who just got paid like the franchise face. Protecting the football is not a vibe. It is two hands, secure tuck, finish the play. Paycor proved the cost of getting cute with that standard.

This column is not a rewrite of that piece. It is the part the scoreboard already corrected.

What Still Worked Anyway

The offense did not punt. Not once.

Irving ran 8 times for 45 yards and a touchdown and caught 7 passes for 48. Emeka Egbuka had 5 catches for 63. The team rushed for 89. Mayfield's accuracy kept drives alive even while the ball security cratered. That split is the Week 1 problem in clean English: the throws were mostly clean, the holding was not.

You can move the chains and still lose the game if you keep handing the opponent short fields. Cincinnati did not need to invent pressure. Tampa Bay kept inventing opportunities. That is why the final looked competitive and the underlying football was not.

On defense, Josiah Trotter (not Jeremiah) announced himself. Eleven tackles. A sack. A pick-six. The team site called it a historic debut. One rookie linebacker putting a stamp on an otherwise messy afternoon does not erase the third-down leaks or the missed tackles Bowles flagged. It does mean the roster still has teeth when it finishes plays instead of extending them.

The Bucs broke a streak of five straight Week 1 wins. The last Week 1 loss before this one was 2020, the Super Bowl year. This was also a fourth straight series loss to Cincinnati. History is not destiny. It is context. Context says the opener was a ball-security failure dressed up as a one-score road game.

Cleveland Walks Into Raymond James

Sunday, Sep 20. 1:00 PM ET. Raymond James Stadium. CBS. Home opener.

Cleveland is 0-1 after a 34-10 loss at Jacksonville. Deshaun Watson went 16 of 22 for 205 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and took five sacks. The Browns did not look like a finished product. Neither did Tampa Bay. That is why this week is a fork, not a parade.

There is no revenge soap opera about Cincinnati. That game is already on the ledger. Cleveland brings a different problem set: edge pressure that already got home five times in Jacksonville, and a defense that will punish loose ball carriers the same way the Bengals did if Tampa Bay repeats the fumble tape.

The NFC South is entirely 0-1. Carolina at Atlanta in Week 2 will mint the division's first 1-0 team. The Bucs have not started 0-2 since 2014. That streak is not a security blanket. It is a calendar warning. Lose the home opener and the South already has someone else owning first place while Tampa Bay digs out of a hole it dug itself in Ohio.

Injuries stay fluid. Parrish's back sprain had imaging come back negative. McMillan, Tucker, and Skule are status-careful, not locked inactives written in stone. Do not project the inactive list as settled. Do project that whoever dresses still has to secure the football.

Two Hands Is the Whole Job

Cincinnati already took its points. Cleveland is a different defense, a different quarterback pressure package, and a different crowd noise. The constant is Tampa Bay's own ball.

Mayfield does not need another speech about leadership. He needs to finish carries and throws without putting the football in a jumble sale. Irving does not need moral victories for the receiving volume. He needs the rock glued to his frame when contact arrives. Bowles already named the three sins: turnovers, penalties, missed tackles. Fix those and the home opener becomes a football game instead of a referendum on whether Week 1 was an outlier or a preview.

The Heat Index still has the Buccaneers at No. 13, in the mix. That is a competence forecast. Wins decide the window. An 0-2 start does not close the season in September. It does change how loud the questions get before the lights hit Raymond James.

Betting lines are noise. The job is simpler. Hold the football. Clean up the false starts. Finish tackles. Then see if Cleveland can do more with Watson under duress than Cincinnati did with free points.

Florida does not need a soft landing story. It needs a team that holds the football in its own building.

Hold It, Then Host Them

Week 1 was not a moral victory. It was a 27-33 loss fueled by four lost fumbles and 24 Bengals points off turnovers. Mayfield's 23 of 28 looked clean until you counted the fumbles. The extension was real. The ownership quote was real. The zero-turnover framing was not.

Sunday is the first chance to make that distinction matter in front of the home crowd. Cleveland is 0-1 and bruised. Tampa Bay is 0-1 and self-inflicted. Two hands on the ball is not a slogan for the tunnel. It is the only opener rule that survives contact.

Hold it. Then host them.

Gameday in Florida: three road trips and one loud homecoming

NFL Sunday is here and Florida's trio spreads across three time zones of trouble.

Buccaneers at Bengals, 1:00. Paycor Stadium. Cincinnati's building gets loud early and the Bucs walk into the teeth of it. Road opener. Real temperature check.

Jaguars host Cleveland, 1:00 at EverBank. First home crowd of the season, and Duval does not do polite. The Browns bring a defense that travels. The pool decks bring the volume. Something has to give.

Dolphins at Las Vegas, 4:25. Allegiant, late window, west coast trip. Miami speed on that surface is a problem for everybody, and the Raiders know it. If the Fins get to the second level, it turns into a track meet.

Three games, three different kinds of tests. Road noise in Ohio. Home chaos in Jacksonville. Desert lights in Vegas.

Buccaneers at Panthers

Preview

Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET · Bank of America Stadium · Fox

Fallback preview: facts only, no desk projection locked.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-5) play on the road this week against the Carolina Panthers (3-2). Kickoff is Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET at Bank of America Stadium, on Fox.

The market has the Buccaneers as underdogs (Buccaneers +2.8). The consensus total is 44.4, across 7 books, as of 2026-10-23T15:54:43+00:00. Those are the market's numbers, recorded before kickoff so the record cannot move later.

The Buccaneers reported no injuries in the build-time feed. That is a statement about the feed, not a guarantee about game day.

This preview was written by the deterministic fallback because the desk writer was unavailable at build time. It prints facts from the build packet only: no desk projection was locked for this game, and the companion scorecard records the market lines as the pregame record instead. In a normal week the desk locks its own numbers here; this week there are none, and the receipt says so plainly.

After the game, the scorecard fills with the final score and the market record is checked against it. Hits and misses both stay on the page. That is the whole point of the receipts: the record is the record, including the weeks the desk could not write.

Team Outlook

2-5 with an 0-4 home record against a 2-1 road record, Tampa Bay now gets five South games to decide the season. Baker Mayfield opens that stretch with Atlanta at home Nov 1, a tiebreak that either revives the chase or buries it.

Tampa Bay already banked the hard travel wins at Dallas and Carolina, so the path now tilts home with Atlanta, Carolina and New Orleans twice still to play. The immediate squeeze is Atlanta Nov 1 then Chicago on the road Nov 8, a seven day turn that tests depth more than rest. With Winfield Jr. trending toward return and Emeka Egbuka ruled out, health decides whether protection and coverage hold long enough to stack tiebreaks.

Largest schedule drag is an 0-4 home record that wastes venue edge, since South home dates against Atlanta and Carolina must flip without proof and the chase needs home wins to climb from tied last.

Atlanta Nov 1 at home then Chicago on the road shows whether rest plus a returning passer can fix 0-4 home form and stack division leverage.

Availability and Matchup Watch

2-5 and tied for last after a 43-13 rout at Carolina, Tampa Bay sits one game off second in a weak NFC South. Baker Mayfield in a contract year fronts a desperate chase where run muscle and rush must cover for home failure until Atlanta proves otherwise.

Dallas delivered a 24-16 road win and Carolina delivered a 43-13 road rout, but four home losses by 4, 7, 3 and 7 points show a group that travels and wilts. Bowles leans on the ground game and play action instead of dropback survival, which protects a banged up line. The team site upgraded outside linebacker Yaya Diaby and Josiah Trotter to full participation Oct 29, while Winfield Jr. trends toward return from a rib issue per JoeBucsFan single-source reporting and Emeka Egbuka is ruled out with a foot issue after clearing concussion protocol per the team site Oct 30. About 15.2 million dollars in active space per OverTheCap allows a short add, but Mayfield contract cost after 3,693 yards with 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 2025 punishes long money. Standings math keeps the chase alive at one game off second with five South games left and every home tiebreak still to play. Strongest countercase is the 0-4 home mark with 19 or fewer points in all four losses, which says Carolina was relief until Raymond James Stadium says otherwise.

Heaviest drag is 0-4 at Raymond James Stadium with 19 or fewer points in all four home losses, which turns home division dates into must wins without proof.

Nov 1 against Atlanta at Raymond James Stadium tests protection, rush, health and home resolve in one shot, then Chicago on the road tests whether any fix travels.

2-5 after a 43-13 win in Carolina, Tampa Bay holds 15,225,108 dollars in active space per OverTheCap. General manager Jason Licht faces a buy or hold call around Baker Mayfield in a contract year, where short money can patch a line but cannot fix 0-4 at home.

Tampa Bay holds about 15.2 million dollars in active space per OverTheCap, down from about 19.8 million in July, enough for a signing or short term add without emergency moves. That flexibility fits a tackle or secondary patch into Atlanta week even with Mayfield carrying the largest charge. Cash cannot fix an 0-4 home mark alone, which ties dollars directly to the limits Bowles faces at 2-5.

Largest drag is that one midlevel add cannot fix an 0-4 home mark plus five players on injured reserve or out, which caps what cash can do for a 2-5 chase.

Injury designations plus any transaction filing before Nov 1 against Atlanta will show whether Tampa Bay buys into the South race or preserves room for the Mayfield decision.

2-5 and tied for last after a 43-13 rout at Carolina, Tampa Bay sits one game off second in the NFC South. Baker Mayfield fronts a last stand South chase where road maul sets a crown ceiling and banged up depth sets a basement floor.

Tampa Bay pounds for 1,025 yards at 4.9 per carry while allowing 77.3 on the ground, and that double wall traveled to Dallas and Carolina. Sixteen sacks made with eight picks gives Bowles a complementary punch that lets Mayfield win on efficiency instead of hero ball. That formula keeps five South games live in the standings, but only if Raymond James Stadium finally holds up.

Largest drag is 22 sacks allowed for 127 yards plus five on injured reserve or out, with Offensive tackle Luke Goedeke questionable with a calf and Kenny Gainwell questionable with a hip per the team site Oct 30. That protection and depth crack caps a chase that needs home South wins.

Atlanta at home Nov 1 at Raymond James Stadium shows whether the Carolina run script and cleaner protection travel home, with inactives for Goedeke and Gainwell as the tell.

Tied for last at 2-5 after a 30 point rout in Carolina, Tampa Bay still sits one game off second in a soft NFC South. Baker Mayfield owns a last stand chase alive on five South games, with a crown ceiling if Raymond James Stadium flips and a basement floor if 0-4 at home holds.

Tampa Bay banked a 1-0 South start with the 43-13 win at Carolina, so head to head wins can erase the gap fast. The 2-1 road mark at Dallas and Carolina proves travel toughness, while a plus 11 point edge at 162 scored against 151 allowed keeps ugly win paths live. That split plus run defense allowing 77.3 yards per game ties the table directly to rush and rush defense in statistics.

Largest drag is 2-5 with an 0-4 home record at Raymond James Stadium, including 19-23 to Cleveland, 16-23 to Minnesota, 14-17 to Green Bay and 19-26 to Pittsburgh, which turns every South home date into a must win without proof. That home funk hits the chase directly because tiebreaks mean nothing without home wins.

Atlanta at home Nov 1 is the next standings swing, with a win pulling Tampa Bay even in the loss column and a loss digging a hole no road win can hide.

Team Outlook

Outscoring foes 162 to 151 through seven games at 2-5 off a 43-13 rout in Carolina, Tampa Bay wins ugly behind the run wall and rush. Baker Mayfield lives off play action until protection proves it, with a South crown ceiling if the pass game holds and a basement floor if sacks and picks pile up.

Tampa Bay runs for 146.4 yards per game at 4.9 per carry while allowing 77.3, plus the kicker is perfect at 16 for 16. That run plus kick formula travels and explains the Dallas and Carolina road wins. The capped pass game at 150.4 net yards with seven interceptions against six scores ties directly to roster health and caps the South chase until protection holds.

Largest drag is pass protection and ball security, with 22 sacks allowed for 127 yards and seven interceptions thrown against six passing scores for 150.4 net passing yards per game and a plus 1 gap that is thin, which caps a South crown chase built on run first ball.

Sacks allowed versus sacks made plus third down and red zone scores against Atlanta will show whether Carolina was a turn or a road outlier.
